Data Licensing

Using Strength Level standards, data and models in other products

Strength Level has developed strength standards since 2007. Our 2026 standards cover 287 exercises, based on 195,513,376 lifts submitted by 27,893,268 users from 2015 to 2026.

We also operate Running Level, Rowing Level, Cycling Level and Swimming Level, whose users submitted a combined 5,978,452 results from 2020 to 2026.

Our calculators and standards are free to use on our websites, but not free to copy into another product. Here's how we handle research, commercial licensing and personal projects.

Academic Research

With researchers from Edith Cowan University and the University of the Sunshine Coast, we analysed squat, bench press and deadlift submissions from 74,892 Strength Level users in 2024 to develop strength standards by age and sex. The peer-reviewed study was published on 23 October 2026:

Clark M, Latella C, van den Hoek D. Reference values for the squat, bench press and deadlift in recreationally trained and strength-interested individuals aged 12-79 years. BMC Sports Sci Med Rehabil. 2026. In press. doi:10.1186/s13102-026-02195-6.

University research teams can propose studies of strength, fitness, performance or health. Please explain what you want to study, which data you need and your plans for ethics approval. Research access is limited to the agreed project. Before sharing data, we agree how it will be used and protected and how the findings will be published. We also agree how to credit Strength Level through a citation, acknowledgement or co-authorship, depending on our contribution. We may contribute data, calculation tools or statistical analysis.

Students are welcome to cite our public standards, but we do not normally provide datasets, API access or technical support for individual coursework projects or student apps. Building an app for a university assignment is different from an approved research collaboration.

A published paper does not make the data or models used on our websites openly licensed. For reusable competition data, consider OpenPowerlifting. See our About page for more on our research.

Commercial Use

You need permission to use our standards, percentiles, models or exercise data in another product. Commercial use requires a written licence. Free, open source and unreleased apps still need permission.

Is attribution enough?

No. Attribution does not replace a licence. We can't grant permission to use our strength standards in return for a credit, link or "Powered by Strength Level" message. You're welcome to link users to our calculators and standards instead.

My app is free now. Can I use your data and commercialise it later?

No, not without a written licence. We can't provide our standards for free in return for a credit, even if you might charge users later. Please don't build a product around our data expecting permission later. Using AI tools to develop your app doesn't change this.

What if I only copy a few values or use them behind the scenes?

You still need permission to use our standards in another product if you copy tables manually, scrape them or only use a few exercises, such as bench press, squat and deadlift.

The same applies to using our values to derive exercise ratios, rankings, hidden scores or strength standards, even if you change units, interpolate between values, rename the levels or never display the original values.

I've already built it. Can you approve it before launch?

Please ask before using our data, not afterwards. If you've already used our standards without permission, please stop using them while we discuss it. We can't promise approval or a faster reply to meet a launch deadline. You're welcome to develop your own strength standards using independently developed methods and data you have the right to use.

We don't claim ownership of the general ideas of strength ratings, percentiles or workout tracking. Our concern is copying or systematically reusing our data, models and other protected material.

Commercial Licensing

We consider licensing our models and exercise data to established businesses. We prefer this to supplying copies of published tables. A licence may include strength standards, percentile calculations, age, sex and bodyweight adjustments, exercise mappings, model versions and updates, and calculations running within your app or servers. We don't provide individual users' raw training data.

For access to our models and exercise data, pricing may be comparable to the annual cost of a senior software engineer. The quote depends on the exercises, calculations, deployment and support required. We don't generally sell our data for a small one-time fee, or accept promotion and possible future revenue instead of payment.

We do not offer a public API for our strength standards or percentiles. Each commercial agreement covers the models, updates, support and how you can use them.

Personal and Non-Commercial Projects

You can link to our calculators, standards and exercise guides without asking. Linking is different from embedding a calculator, systematically storing its results, copying data or implying an official partnership.

We don't have capacity to supply custom datasets, exports, API keys, exercise mappings or technical support for individual hobby projects, or to review every request to copy a few values. Being personal, educational, open source or non-commercial doesn't give you permission to copy our standards. Please use openly licensed data if your project needs it.

Exercise Images

Our GymVisual exercise illustrations are licensed for use on Strength Level. We can't grant permission to use them in other apps, websites, videos or publications. A credit or watermark doesn't give permission to reuse them. Please contact GymVisual directly.

Personal Workout Data and APIs

In your Strength Level account, choose Export, then Export All Workouts to download your workout history as a CSV file. It contains one row per set, including the date, exercise, weight and reps. We are considering an API for users to access their own workout history, but have no release date. This would be separate from commercial licensing of our standards and models.
